- The 2010 Canterbury earthquake was a 7.1 magnitude earthquake (revised down from an initial estimate of 7.4) which struck the South Island of New Zealand at 4:35 am 4 September 2010 local time (16:35 3 September UTC). It caused widespread damage and several power outages, particularly in the city of Christchurch, and two residents were seriously injured. Its epicentre was 40 km west of Christchurch, near the town of Darfield, at a depth of 10 km. Strong aftershocks were reported, including one of magnitude 5.7.
