The Auckland Region is one of the sixteen regions of New Zealand, named for the city of Auckland City, New Zealand's largest. It is the most populous region of New Zealand, as well as being the most prosperous in economic terms. It is in the northern part of North Island, below Northland Region. From 1 November 2010, the Auckland Region will become a unitary authority controlled by the Auckland Council, replacing the existing regional council and seven local councils.
