Introduction
The Caribbean Netherlands (Dutch: Caribisch Nederland) are Caribbean islands that hold the status of "public bodies" (Dutch: openbare lichamen), informally known as "special municipalities" (Dutch: bijzondere gemeenten), of the Netherlands. The Caribbean Netherlands are also called BES islands (an acronym of the names of the largest islands of Bonaire, Sint Eustatius and Saba), mainly in legal documents. The islands gained their current status following the dissolution of the Netherlands Antilles on 10 October 2010. Bonaire (including the islet of Klein Bonaire) is located east of Aruba and Curaçao, close to the coast of Venezuela. Sint Eustatius and Saba are located south of Sint Maarten and northwest of Saint Kitts and Nevis. The three islands have a combined total of 18,000 inhabitants and an area of 328 square kilometers. The time zone is UTC-4. The country code remains 599, that of the former Netherlands Antilles, and is shared with Curaçao and Sint Maarten. Wikipedia:Caribbean Netherlands
