- The Need
- The Azakhail Payon Afghan Refugee Camp in Nowshera, North West Frontier Province (NWFP) was home to 5000 refugee households until recently. Recent flooding in Pakistan has completely washed away this camp - once full of mud houses and meager vegetable gardens that the refugees had painstakingly created over the last 30 years in their bid towards a more permanent settlement and self-sufficiency. Of the many thousands displaced from this refugee camp, which lies at the border of NWFP and Punjab, some 70-75 households have taken shelter in Attock, Punjab. Attock has been the base of Barakat’s operations since 1994 and Barakat schools have been serving the Afghan refugee settlement there for 16 years now.
